- We provide a sense of community.
Often in a suburban area, dietary options can seem very limited and people may often feel isolated, especially if they are living alone, have just re-located to our area and/or do not have family living close by.
- We improve awareness of our concerns in the mainstream community.
We attempt to improve awareness of the benefits of a plant-based diet and animal rights as well as promote restaurant owners who are willing to alter their menus and make accommodations.
- We support cultural diversity and the preservation of "green" culinary heritage.
Durham Veg's signature event is the annual Hot Roots Soups Festival in downtown Oshawa. During a week in February, between 10 - 20 restaurants follow Afro-Caribbean recipes to make vegetarian/vegan soups to serve in their own locations and in additional "outreach venues" such as City Hall.
- We share new recipes and the latest product information.
At our meetings, and through the Toronto Vegetarian Association, we share the latest information on new restaurants, new recipes, new products and new opportunities to spread the word.
- We make travelling easier.
Our travel cards make explaining your diet in a new country much easier. Take a look at our travel cards. Also, often the restaurant owners will want to keep the card for their own reference. If so, you can always obtain more from this website.
- We advocate.
We are involved in a number of activities to draw attention to the plight of farm animals and pet animals throughout Ontario.
- We monitor nutrition research.
Our volunteers are recipients of postings from leading researchers in scholarly institutions worldwide. We pass along the latest findings relevant to vegetarians and vegan whenever possible.
